EMDR Therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based way of helping you reduce negative beliefs about yourself, the world, and others, which helps you feel more safe, loveable, and worthy. And yes, it works in online therapy, too!

EMDR is helpful for treating many mental health conditions and life experiences including:

Maybe you’ve heard of EMDR, but you’re not sure what exactly it involves or how it works.

EMDR is a body-based treatment that includes using bilateral stimulation (meaning both sides of the body) through eye movements, tapping, or sounds while focusing on the trauma or upsetting event. The idea of focusing on the event(s) itself might sound scary. But I’ll be there to guide you, and each window of bilateral stimulation lasts only 30-90 seconds. We take breaks to help you process and experience shifts in bodily sensations and emotions, until you begin to experience relief.

Sessions can be completed during 50 minute sessions or can be done in an intensive format consisting of 3-6 hour blocks at a time.

Benefits of EMDR Intensives:

Intensives are a time-efficient and depth-oriented technique that can support you in feeling better faster. With more time devoted upfront, you shorten treatment by weeks or even months. This can be helpful for people who want to achieve change faster, for whom it is more urgent, or for those with busy schedules who may not be able to commit to weekly therapy every week and would rather do work in larger chunks. Another additional benefit of EMDR intensives is that it can reduce the amount of time in prolonged distress between sessions that may come up and impair daily functioning because we get through trauma memories more quickly.

EMDR typically allows for a shorter duration in therapy compared to traditional talk therapies by helping the brain process traumatic, stressful, or upsetting events.

When a traumatic experience is happening, the brain cannot completely process the experience because it is focused on helping you survive. This is an important survival mechanism we can learn to be grateful for, but it’s also why after a traumatic event, or years or trauma, it can feel just like yesterday. You might still have intense reactions and feelings like fear, grief, anger, and guilt in addition to strong images and even nightmares.

EMDR can help put these memories in the right place so that these memories feel less intense and overwhelming, and you can go about your life feeling more at peace with whatever it was that happened instead of reliving it.
